Howard Simmons
Partner
Howard Simmons is the founding partner of Simmons, da Silva
& Sinton and has practised law since 1969. Howard's practice
is focused on business and the people who run these enterprises.
He advises clients in the areas of business law, business succession
and complex estate planning.
Howard provides business clients with guidance on agreements,
leases, contracts, settlement of disputes, purchase and sale
of businesses, financing, tax and other general corporate matters.
Over the years, his clients have presented him with a broad
range of complex needs including shareholder disputes, joint
ventures, licensing agreements, cross border arrangements and
other unusual contractual relations. Acting for mid-sized owner
operated private corporations located throughout Ontario and
the United States as well as internationally, Howard has been
involved in almost every aspect of business creation, growth,
cross-border expansion and decline. He has a particular strength
in the area of Income Tax, and has written a book on the subject.
A natural complement to his practice are the succession planning
services provided to entrepreneurs for the healthy transition
of their business to new shareholders and management. Howard
provides early planning guidance and transition support as well
as ongoing mentoring to the retiring owner and new owners.
Howard has developed a reputation for his advice to those with
more complex requirements, such as high net-worth individuals,
trusts for disabled beneficiaries and 'baby boomers' wishing
to ensure that their aging parents are properly provided for
in the event of their own disability or death.
Howard has lectured at universities and law conferences on
business, tax and related law areas. He has also taught Bar
admission courses for the Law Society of Upper Canada.
